Cisco IOS uses Tcl [1] programming language for a variety of purposes:

• Embedded Event Manager responds to events by executing applets stored in router configuration or policies written in Tcl;
• Embedded Syslog Manager uses Tcl to filter syslog messages;
• Voice handlers can be written in VoiceXML or Tcl;
• Tcl files can be executed from the command line with the tclsh to enhance the IOS user interface.
